Enabling collaboration and deploying shared procedures across Yellow Ribbon Support Specialists in every U.S. state and territory was necessary in order to make life for soldiers returning to America as easy as possible. In addition, GAPSI saw the opportunity to increase process efficiency and lower overall administrative costs for the program through the use of a business process management software tool - software that facilitates the intelligent flow of information among people and systems based on specific business rules.

In a show of support for U.S. troops, Metastorm agreed to donate its BPM software for the Yellow Ribbon Support Specialist program portal and related business processes. The Metastorm BPM suite is widely used by both U.S. Federal defense and civilian agencies, so Metastorm expanded GAPSI's existing Metastorm software license agreement to cover the Yellow Ribbon Project at no additional cost to GAPSI or the Army National Guard.

The Metastorm BPM system was quickly deployed to support a portal that allows distributed access to a single repository for forms, templates, reports, and discussion forums to facilitate communication among geographically dispersed Yellow Ribbon Support Specialists, and provides automated business processes to expedite key administrative procedures, such as soldier travel.

The integrated portal/business process management solution has produced excellent results, including an estimated savings of 4,752 man hours per year previously spent on paperwork and manual activities related to the travel process alone - time that can now be devoted directly to supporting returning soldiers rather than administrative tasks.
